When we were still kids, our parents always reminded us to brush our teeth after every meal. They also did not allow us to eat candies and chocolates frequently because it will cause tooth decay. Though as children, we could not have followed this religiously.

As we grew up, we learned that these are all true because brushing regularly proves to keep our oral health in good condition. This is also the very basic way in preventing inflamed gums. To do this, you need to brush your teeth using a toothbrush with soft bristles and do it in circular motion. This way, the gums are not irritated. Using toothpaste with fluoride improves the body’s repair rate that helps resist bacteria that may be residing in the mouth. If you do not brush regularly, there is a big chance that plaque will start to build up and form hardened tartar. This will settle on the gum line that causes irritation that leads to swelling.

If there is such a thing as lack of brushing, there is also over-brushing. Tooth brushing more than four times a day is considered over-brushing that might cause abrasion to the thin tissues of the gum line. This will ultimately result to redness, swelling and gum recession. In addition, remember to brush using gentle strokes so as not to aggravate inflamed gums.

Flossing is also an important part in a person’s dental care hygiene. This can remove particles stuck in the gaps between teeth, therefore eliminating the risk of cavities forming in this area. Take note that every time we eat, more particles build up inside the mouth thus, acid is created at a faster rate and this promotes a higher risk of cavity production. The proper use of dental floss can exceedingly get rid of cavity-forming food particles.

Eating fruits and vegetables rich in vitamins and minerals that help in boosting the body’s immune system is also fundamental in preventing swollen gums. Vitamin C and D have anti-bacterial and anti-inflammatory properties needed to inhibit bacteria from developing in the mouth.

Lastly, a visit to the dentist at least once every two months is also advisable. The dentist can perform a check up on the status of your teeth, if it needs cleaning or there is an underlying problem that needs to be treated before it gets severe. It is better to prevent gum problems from developing to save yourself from the stresses it can cause you.
